TGS post #1: YMCK
Okay, I'm gonna pace myself and do the TGS reportage just a little bit at a time. And non-chronologically, 'cause chronologically never works for me; I dunno how people can do it.

Although, actually, before I get started, here's a few pictures I've been meaning to upload and post for ages:

An amusing statue in Shizuoka-shi, right in the city.
I don't know how they got away with it.

A hair thingo that... well. You get it.

And of course the requisite Engrish photo; this is on a vending machine:

Right, so, TGS! I went for two main reasons: Ken Kutaragi's keynote, and a set by YMCK at the D4 Enterprise booth on Saturday -- a small booth, right across from one corner of Sony's acreage. I'll write more about D4 later, probably -- not that I know much about them.

We (Dan, Eleanor and I) arrived just late enough on Friday to miss the keynote. I was disappointed. I've heard, since then, that it was very boring, so maybe I didn't miss much, but I dunno -- I have a strange sense of humour, and Kutaragi is really a wonderfully insane man. More about him later, too.

So that leaves YMCK to talk about, first thing!

YMCK are a chiptune band with a cute female vocalist, or perhaps I should say, female cute-vocalist. Well, it's correct both ways. Her name's Midori, and the boys are Yokemura and Nakamura. Anyway. They were one of (I think) four chiptune bands/musicians playing at the D4 booth about midday, and the only one I cared about -- although, the others turned out to be really good too. Here is one of them:

That's Twinbee in the foreground, there.

Okay, so, here's YMCK setting up:

...minus Naka, who's off to the left. You can see Midori at the back there, with this stripey guy who was hanging around her; I dunno, maybe her boyfriend or something. Pfff. WHATEVER.

So, the set starts. The TV, there, played the film clip along with each song. Have you guys seen any YMCK film clips? Do yourself a favour and do a YouTube search.

As you can see, Midori was dressed as a Famicom. There was even a tiny little Famicom glued to her headband. If I still have any fangirls these days, and if any of them are reading: Girls, dress up like a Famicom and you can probably be my girlfriend. Oh, that reminds me!

On Saturday (probably not long after the chiptune show, actually), I saw these amazingly attractive Peach and Daisy cosplayers. Or, to put it a better way, I saw this amazingly attractive Daisy cosplayer and there happened to be an equally attractive Peach with her. I totally double-taked. I'm afraid I don't have a photo to show you, 'cause I was on my way somewhere and they were just sitting down for lunch, and then I forgot about them. I know Dan got a shot of them, though, so that'll probably be in Total Gamer.

The point is -- and once again, attractive female readers, this is directed at you -- if you become a sex partner of mine at some point, you might want to consider dressing up as Princess Daisy, just out of the blue one day. I won't ever ask you to, but if you just did one day... well. That would be okay by me. I would be receptive to that.

Um... so.

For the possible handful of other girls reading -- girls who don't want to have sex with me -- allow me to draw your attention to Naka and Yoke. Check them out in their snappy suits. Naka (left) has one of those serious faces, and you can tell he's a little shy, maybe. But Yoke... oh my god. If I were gay. Seriously. His face is handsome and cute at the same time, and he was such a good performer, with all these little mannerisms and actions -- he was really into the songs. Although, I believe he's the one who writes them, so there you go.

Watching Yoke, I kept thinking, "If only [list of about ten girls I know, plus Gabe] were here." You guys missed out.

Not that I'm dissing Naka or anything, he's just not my type. NEITHER IS YOKE, I'M NOT GAY, OH MY GOD.

Aw, look at his messy li'l tufts of hair.

OKAY THEN, MORE PHOTOS.

Stop dancing, you guys -- I can't get a clear shot.

Awww, she like a little china doll.

So I met them all after the show: First Naka, then Yoke, then Naka came over, then Midori came over too. I only got to chat to Nake and Yoke properly -- Midori kind of vanished straight after the set -- but they were all sweet and adorable, and were all really grateful and lovely when I said how much I enjoyed the show, and that I'd been a fan even before coming to Japan. And I know I'm just digging the hole even deeper here, but Yoke was equally gorgeous in person -- a real character. I think he might be gay, maybe. I dunno.

Maybe he was attracted to me...?

I did get some photos with YMCK, but they're all dark and blurry, and anyway I said I wouldn't post them. Yoke explained that photos of their shows are okay, but they try to avoid close-up photos or 'band photos', because they prefer the fun and mystery of their 8-bit sprite personas. They're not fiercely secretive or anything, they just prefer the sprite stuff to be the prevailing image of YMCK.

So, yeah! That was the YMCK show. It was neato.

The whole point of the chiptune show was to promote the '1chipMSX', a nifty little MSX emulator -- it's what Twinbee is playing on in that photo up there. The first couple of musicians, before YMCK, were actually using the 1chipMSX. Here it is:

Okay, I guess that's the end of this entry. NEXT ISH: Super Bros. World 1.

The better dressed you are, the more people want to take your clothes off!

It's a crazy world.

I love the YMCK. Lucky! And with that Famicom dress, I'd be gay for Midori too.
